Music can heal the wounds that medicine cannot touch.
- Debasish Mridha, M.D.
My heart, which is so full to overflowing, has often been solaced and refreshed by music when sick and weary.
- Martin Luther
Music acts like a magic key, to which the most tightly closed heart opens.
- Maria von Trapp
Music has a consummate ability to stimulate a global network of neural activity involved in attention, emotion, memory, communication, motor co-ordination and cognition. Research studies in neuroscience and music therapy show important implications for the rehabilitation of those with acquired brain injuries and neurodegenerative conditions, and the potential for music to support attention, engagement and emotional regulation, suggesting therapeutic applications for conditions including ADHD, PTSD, autism, learning disorders and mood disorders.
I have been privileged to engage mutually with clients from age nine to ninety, in partnership with their family members and caregivers (including health care professionals), providing individualized programs tailored to specific health needs and musical preferences. Using music, elocution, movement and drama to help people with anxiety, depression, traumatic brain injury, stroke, speech disorders, aneurism, hydrocephalus, and memory loss has been inexpressibly rewarding. It is such a joy and honour to assist people in moving toward their goals of rebuilding the purpose and improving the quality of their lives.
In addition to interactive musical experiences, I offer live and virtual piano and/or vocal music that fosters healing, peace and comfort. Musical offerings for those who are physically ill, troubled in mind, body or spirit, or in palliative or hospice settings, can help to ameliorate feelings of isolation and anxiety. Musical selections are chosen in consultation with the individual, family members and caregivers, and are offered in a spirit of solace and human kindness. Respect and confidentiality are valued.
I welcome you to contact me if you or a loved one could benefit from a multi-faceted, relational approach to well-being through music.
